Arctic Circle Trail | FOOD

Here you can find more information regarding resupply strategies for water and food along the ACT.

Water along the ACT

I personally carried 2L of water with me every day but never drank it all during the stage. There is plenty of water along the trail, which can be collected from a running source or from a clean (not stagnant) lake. We always filtered the collected water, even though we were told it was not really necessary.

Food along the ACT

The ACT is a wild adventure and there are no resupply points along the way. This means that you should be self-sufficient and carry all your food for the planned duration of your hike.
In both Kangerlussuaq and Sisimiut you can find a wide variety of trekking food for resupplying before hitting the trail.

Our Food Plan

For the very first time, we tried to plan in advance our meal schedule for the trail. Since we wanted to experiment a bit, additionally to the usual freeze-dried trekking food, we cooked and dried some recipes at home. We therefore brought all our dried trekking food from home and then bought energy bars and fresh food (bread, cheese, cold cuts) directly in Kangerlussuaq.

Each day we planned to have a breakfast, lunch and dinner and some additional snacks to get the necessary calories. Even if time consuming, we often had two warm meals a day (lunch and dinner), while breakfast most of the time consisted in only some cereal bars. Before leaving home, we prepared ziplock bags containing all the ingredients for a meal. Here you can download our MEAL PLAN EXCEL if you need some inspiration on how to plan this difficult task (we admit we are also very new at it).

You can find more information about our self made recipes in our FOOD section.

TREK’N EAT vs LYO FOOD?

We found the quality and taste of LYO FOOD exceptional and we can confirm without hesitation that this is our new favorite brand for trekking food. TREK’N EAT is of course also very good, but we missed that special taste which made each particular meal unique.

Our Failures

We really wanted to cook eggs for breakfast and bought the TREK’N EAT Scrambles Eggs. However, we totally failed to prepare a good meal, probably because we completely lacked of knowledge and preparation. We will definitely try again next time!

We also tried to cook pancakes using a pancake powder… a total failure! We didn’t manage to create an edible meal, since the pancakes sticked to our pot and burned. Well, we learned our lesson and we will maybe try to put some baking paper inside the pot next time.
